The House of Commons has voted for a FULLY elected second chamber.

Commenting on the House of Commons vote this evening for an 80% elected second chamber, Director of Unlock Democracy Peter Facey said:

"Both Charter 88 and the New Politics Network have campaigned for a 'next best' option of a predominantly elected second chamber on the expectation that it stood the best chance for reform. But we have always preferred a fully elected option ourselves. We are ecstatic that the House of Commons agrees.

"Although the 80% elected option passed as well, only the fully elected option received an absolute majority. We now call upon the Government and House of Lords to respect this decision, remove all obstacles from the path of reform and allow the first elections to take place as soon as possible.

"The dark ages of political patronage are now finally coming to an end."
